Smartphones make us stupid. A smartphone is one of the most technologically advanced pieces of machinery, and we choose to access to it every day. We have a whole universe in our pockets, and we choose to take selfies with it. A smartphone is a bundle of untapped potential. We could have hundreds of Albert Einstein’s roaming around the earth, but instead, we have a bunch of unsocial zombies walking around on their phones.

As author Andrew Keen says in “The Internet is Not the Answer”, “So rather than transforming us into Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg, or Toni Morrison, our smart phones are actually making us more wrapped up in ourselves. In the end, all we are left with is more intimacy with our own lives and less and less knowledge of the wider world around us”. Cell phones control our lives so much that sometimes we confuse what is reality versus what is imaginary, on the screens of our phones.

So the next time you are on Instagram, or are trying to find the next trend to keep up with, research something. Research anything, something that interests you, something that you learned in school. It doesn’t matter. We still need plumbers and mechanics because without them, our toilets wouldn’t flush and our cars wouldn’t run. But we also need doctors and we need inventors.

Next time you are bored, do yourself a favor, do the world a favor, look up from your phones, and research something, anything.
