I am a huge fan of Taylor Swift. I have been to her 1989 concert and her RED tour. However, something happened in the media that made me want to learn more about her.

Recently, Taylor Swift shared her political views on Instagram. This sparked a lot of attention through the press and public, mostly because Taylor Swift never shared her political opinions because she especially didn’t want to “offend” any of her fans’ beliefs. However, she shared her opinion through a heartfelt Instagram post.

Taylor Swift states: “I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights, I believe we all deserve in this country. Any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn… But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳 😃 🌈 ”

After reading this Instagram post caption, I felt like it was inappropriate for Swift to share her political beliefs that were not completely factual and mainly opinionated. The reason why is that she influences a lot of people through her Instagram.

Taylor Swift has 112 million followers on Instagram.

Swift’s wants as a citizen are important. However, she mentions rights for women although she is rooting for a male candidate. A political comment, influenced by the post and made by someone with the Instagram handle name, “Haley from para-more,” mentions, “And here we have a man in power mocking a woman’s value and impact out of what I can only assume is fear. Not fear of an election result but fear of a powerful woman who’s power he now realizes he can not benefit from.” This demonstrates how Taylor Swift is willing to vote for a man mocking women’s values. She cares for women rights? To add, Taylor Swift made a few political comments in her VMA speech that made some viewers uncomfortable.

Reporters are stating that she eliminated a choice for many Americans. I feel that as an entertainer it is her job to entertain and to continue promoting kindness and support for women. However, many people have their own beliefs and have to vote based on their needs and wants. By posting this many voters felt that in order to “be a part of the fan-base,” they needed to follow Taylor’s lead.

I feel that celebrities have to keep their political views to themselves because many people that are not rich and famous need to vote to see drastic change in their community, whether it is taxes, environment, or safety based. Personally, I feel that American citizens should stick to their beliefs and not have to feel obligated to vote for someone just because their idol thinks otherwise.

Taylor Swift is a great role model because she is successful, but I feel that the best way to empower others is to let people vote for what makes their lives better. It’s up to the voter to be influenced by the candidate not by a pop star selling records.
