The rehearsals for NSMS’s rendition of Bye Bye Birdie (Young Performer’s Edition) have a serious vibe. They are taking place at the High School this week.
All participants quietly wait for their scenes to be called for practice, and everyone waits in the wings, silently mouthing the words of their parts to themselves. It is all very professional. They have a passion to get on the stage, and the super-fast wardrobe changes are proof of that! An onlooker would see sincere memorizing, teamwork, and determination.
Clearly, these actors have high expectations about their acting futures. It also seems obvious that everyone is making friends. And, friendship is what Maiko looks forward to. She called the play “a fun opportunity and good opportunity to make new friends.”
Maybe these good vibes are partly the result of Mr. Chillemi’s creativity and great sense of humor too? No matter what the reason, we know it’s going be a great show.
Aaron Dranow, a cast member who took vocal lessons just to prepare for the show, says, “My role in the play is Conrad Birdie. I chose to audition for this role because I like to make people faint with the move of my hips.” You’ve got to admire his mobility and confidence.
We’re on the edge of our seats.
According to Tams-Witmark: A Concord Theatricals Company, Bye Bye Birdie is “A loving musical send-up of the early 1960s, small-town America, teenagers, and rock & roll…[that] remains as fresh and vibrant as ever. Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses all-American girl Kim McAfee for a very public farewell kiss.”
