Chapter 3: Away

“Stop crunching Angelika,” Jack whispered.

“Well sorry,” Angelika scoffed. “It’s hard not to crunch while stepping on dead leaves.”

Suddenly they both heard rustling.

“Shh!” they both said.

More rustling. Then silence.

“What was that?” Angelika tried to sound confident, but Jack could hear worry and anxiety in her voice.

“I dunno,” Jack replied. “Maybe it was like an animal or something?”

“What if it was a person,” Angelika wondered, “an infected person, and-”

More rustling. And more.

A person jumped from a tree. The person (neither Jack nor Angelika could tell whether it was a boy or a girl) was holding a sword and it gleamed in the night. He or she was wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood on, a black T-shirt, black sweatpants, black socks, and black Nike shoes.

Angelika screamed.

Jack yelled, “AHHHHH!”

Angelika pulled her hoodie over her head and pulled the hood of Jack’s sweatshirt over his head.

“Who are you?” the person demanded.

Angelika made a noise that sounded like a mouse getting stepped on.

“Wh-who are you?” Jack stammered.

The person took off their hood. Now they could see that the person was a girl. She had long black hair tied in a high ponytail. She wore a gray bandanna, which contrasted with all the black she was wearing. She had eyeblack on, and her face was dirty. She pointed the tip of her sword towards Jack. “I asked you first,” she growled. “Are you infected? Tell the truth!” The last three words rang throughout the night.

Jack didn’t say anything. He was too scared to do anything- until Angelika pulled his hood down, revealing his face and his blond hair, which fell across his eyes.

“We’re not infected,” Angelika told the girl confidently. There was no trace of fear in her voice, which Jack thought was pretty impressive. “I’m Angelika Kay, and this is Jack-” She turned to Jack. “What’s your last name?”

“Lanturno,” Jack replied, shaking. “Jack Lanturno.”

“Yeah. He’s Jack,” Angelika continued. “Now answer- Who are you?”

Jack figured the girl would attack them. Instead, she smiled. “You’re not infected, huh?” Then before Jack or Angelika could say anything, she said, “Good for you. We’re going to need to survive in this crazy world.” She stuck out her hand. “I’m Nyx Morgan. And this is my brother, Jason.” She looked expectantly next to her. Then she frowned. “JASON!” she yelled up at a tree. “THAT WAS YOUR CUE TO COME DOWN!”
“Jesus, Nyx. I’m coming,” said a voice. A second later, a person slightly taller than Nyx dropped down from another tree.

“And that’s my obnoxious twin brother, Jason Morgan,” Nyx sighed.

“We’re not twins,” Jason muttered. “I’m five minutes and twenty-three seconds younger.”

“Whatever,” Jack interrupted. “We still gotta stick together.”

“Yeah,” Angelika agreed, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we were the last people not infected.”

Nyx and Jason both nodded.

“What are your enhancements?” asked Jack.

“Mine is Camouflage and Jason’s is Enhanced Reflexes,” Nyx replied.

“What’s Enhanced Reflexes?” Angelika wondered.

“I’ll show you,” Jason offered. He did a handstand.

Jack whistled. “Cool.”

Then Jason fell on his face. “Ouch.”

Nyx snickered. “You need some work on that, little bro.”

Jason grunted. “Shut up,” he muttered. Then his stomach rumbled. “God, I’m hungry.”

Jack smiled. “No problem.”

Angelika looked at Jack. “‘No problem?'” she repeated. “We’re in the middle of the woods and you say finding food is ‘no problem’?”

“Yup,” said Jack, grinning bigger.

“Prove it,” said Nyx, her hands across her chest.

“Oh, I will,” Jack told them. Then he looked up at the sky, said a silent prayer, and shouted, “SOUP!!!”

Chapter 4: Bam

Nyx started snickering. “Soup?” she said, clearly trying not to laugh.

Jack kept staring at the sky. “I dunno,” he said wistfully. “Soup has always been my favorite. Especially potato soup. My grandma used to make these great soups. I mean, before the virus hit the town.”

He glanced over at Angelika. Based on her expression, she was probably questioning her friendship with Jack. Jack really hoped she wasn’t doing that.

“Um,” Angelika said. Jack could tell she was trying not to sound judgemental.

“Yeah, Jack,” Nyx interrupted, “do you really think that soup is like going to fall out of the sky or pop out of the ground or something?”

He shrugged.

“Jack,” Angelika started to say, but then a box landed on her head.

Jack’s jaw dropped.

“OW!” Angelika shrieked. “Jack, if that is soup, I swear I will kill you. I’m pretty sure that box gave me another bruise on my head-”

“Another one?” Jack asked.

Angelika muttered something under my breath- something about the Sanjay jungle gym falling on her head.

Meanwhile, Nyx and Jason were busy opening the box. “Guys?” Nyx said. Her voice was nervous for the first time Jack had heard it. “Umm… you better come see this.”

Then a female robotic voice said, “Time to die in 5… 4…”

“RUN!” Angelika screamed.

There was a sudden rush of movement as Nyx, Jason, Angelika, and Jack scrambled to their feet and ran as fast as they could.

“JASON!” Nyx shrieked. “IF I LOSE YOU I SWEAR I WILL KILL YOU AND MYSELF SO DON’T GET LOST-”

“3.. 2..”

“Wow, Nyx,” Jason yelled, “I thought you never really cared for me but I guess that’s changed-”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I NEVER CARED FOR YOU????” Nyx screamed. “OBVIOUSLY I CARE ABOUT YOU, YOU’RE MY LITTLE BROTHER, EVEN THOUGH YOU’RE A BORING NERD SOMETIMES-”

“1… 0. Sudden death initiated.”

“SHUT UP AND RUN!” Jack shouted.

As the wood behind them exploded, Jack tripped over something and he fell forward.

He tried to get up, but before he could, the world went dark.
